RUMAWAY

After talking about a sailing charter vacation for several years with friends, our family finally decided it was time to make it happen. Instead of going with a larger group, we chose to take the trip with just the four of us—my wife and I and our two children, ages 18 and 21. After researching numerous charter boats, reading reviews, and watching videos, we ultimately selected Paradigm Shift.

Like many people planning their first charter, we spent a lot of time comparing boats. The reality is that many of the sailboats are beautiful, well-maintained, and visit many of the same destinations. What ultimately convinced us to choose Paradigm Shift was Captain Kendell and Kari. Based on everything we read and watched, we felt that the crew would be the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. We were absolutely right.

Captain Kendell was outstanding from the moment we stepped aboard. His sailing knowledge, boating expertise, and familiarity with the islands were impressive. He seemed to know exactly where to go, when to go, and how to avoid crowds while maximizing our experience. Whether we were finding the perfect snorkeling spot, discovering a hidden beach, or enjoying a sunset sail, his local knowledge made every day special. What I appreciated most was his willingness to share his experiences. He took the time to explain sailing techniques, boat systems, and life aboard a sailboat, making the trip both educational and enjoyable. He was always approachable, professional, and clearly passionate about what he does.

Kari was equally amazing. The food she prepared throughout the week was simply exceptional. To this day, I'm still amazed at the quality and variety of meals she created from such a small galley. Every meal felt like something you would expect at a high-end restaurant, yet it was served in the relaxed atmosphere of our own private sailboat. Beyond her culinary skills, Kari has a remarkable ability to anticipate guests' needs. She seemed to instinctively know when we wanted conversation, when we needed something, and when we simply wanted to relax and enjoy the moment as a family. That balance is a rare talent and one that greatly enhanced our experience.

What made this trip truly memorable was how comfortable and welcome Kendell and Kari made us feel. By the end of the week, it felt less like we had hired a captain and chef and more like we had spent time with friends who happened to know the islands better than anyone else. They created an atmosphere that allowed our family to disconnect from everyday life, reconnect with each other, and make memories that we will talk about for years to come.

If you are considering a charter vacation and are comparing boats, my advice is to pay as much attention to the crew as you do the boat itself. Paradigm Shift is a beautiful sailboat, but Captain Kendell and Kari are what make the experience exceptional. They exceeded every expectation we had and made our first charter trip one we will never forget.

Our trip on Paradigm Shift was amazing!! The boat was pristine and well equipped and Kari and Kendall were absolutely amazing!! Kendall set up a Zoom call with us prior to our trip and took down all of our wants and needs. And he ended up putting together an itinerary that was tailored to exactly what we wanted. And Kari's cooking was beyond our expectations. We ate like kings and queens. And finally, we got to know them so well that we are still in touch and they may visit us this summer. This was my first charter experience, and here's what I learned: It’s all about the crew! From the moment we met Chef Kari, with her warm and infectious smile, and Captain Kendall, who immediately made us feel welcome, we knew we were in excellent hands! This incredible team has a chemistry that will be hard to find on any other charter. They have a way of naturally creating a positive, fun, and authentic vibe that at the end of the trip, you won't want to leave. From start to finish, we felt at home.

They took incredible care of us throughout the trip. Everything we wanted to do was thoughtfully planned. For example, when we went snorkeling (only my second time!), Kari and Kendall went with us, making sure everyone felt safe and comfortable while still having an amazing time. Great peace of mind! Plus, I could relax knowing someone was keeping an eye on me.

They even provided pirate hats and fun accessories to make our visit to Willy T’s extra memorable!

Captain Kendall was knowledgeable, friendly, and fun, all while maintaining a strong focus on safety. He knew the best places to go - for white beaches, turquoise waters, snorkeling, stargazing, sunsets and sunrises, and some secret gems along the way. We really enjoyed getting to know both of them and sharing stories over dinner and late night jam sessions (our group had 2 musicians).

The food and unique rum drinks were absolutely delicious and exactly what we were hoping for! Yummy seafood and breakfast dishes!

If you’re looking for a charter crew that anticipates your needs, checks in often, makes fantastic drinks and meals...and is ready to make your trip remarkable, I highly recommend Kari and Kendall. An unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to do it again!

An Unforgettable BVI Adventure with Kendell and Kari!

My recent charter boat trip to the British Virgin Islands was, without a doubt, one of the most incredible experiences of my life, thanks in large part to our phenomenal crew, Captain Kendell and our amazing chef, Kari!

From the moment we stepped aboard, we knew we were in for a treat. Captain Kendell navigated the stunning BVI waters with expert precision and a fantastic sense of humor, ensuring every stop was perfectly timed for maximum enjoyment. He truly knows all the best spots and made us feel safe and relaxed throughout the entire journey.

And then there's Kari... oh, the food! Every single meal was a culinary masterpiece. Seriously, if you're a food lover, Kari's cooking alone is reason enough to book this charter. From fresh, vibrant breakfasts to gourmet lunches and decadent dinners, each dish was prepared with passion and skill, using the freshest ingredients. We were constantly amazed by the variety and quality – it truly felt like dining at a five-star restaurant every day, but with the most breathtaking ocean views imaginable.

Our itinerary was packed with iconic BVI gems:

Foxy's (Jost Van Dyke): The perfect spot for a lively evening, great music, and vibrant atmosphere.

Willy T's: A rite of passage and an absolute blast!

Soggy Dollar Bar (Jost Van Dyke): Famous for Painkillers and unforgettable beach vibes.

Lime Out (St. John/Coral Bay): Tacos and cocktails in paradise – what more could you ask for?

The Baths (Virgin Gorda): An absolutely stunning natural wonder, perfect for exploring the massive granite boulders and grottoes.

Virgin Gorda: Beyond The Baths, its natural beauty and serene bays are captivating.

The Bitter End Yacht Club (Virgin Gorda): A fantastic spot to relax, enjoy the nautical atmosphere, and grab a drink.

Saba Rock: A newly rebuilt, fantastic spot to relax and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and incredible views.

Every stop offered something unique, and Kendell ensured we had ample time to swim, snorkel, explore, or simply soak in the stunning surroundings.

This charter trip was more than just a vacation; it was an immersive experience that recharged our souls. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure in the BVI with top-notch service, incredible food, and a crew that feels like family, look no further. Kendell and Kari made this trip truly epic, and I cannot recommend them enough! We are already dreaming of our next trip back with them!

Tara and Travis are THE BEST! We had a beautiful family trip that they tailored to our likes and preferences. Chef Tara makes delicious meals that kids and adults loved. Highly recommend and will be back soon!

From the moment we booked the trip to the (sad) moment we got off the boat, everything was perfect. Tara and Travis planned the most wonderful itinerary for us around the BVI, kept a drink in our hands and fed us the most amazing food. The boat is awesome, from the small touches (our own Stanley water bottles and insulated cups to use on board) to the big ones (the floating dock and the furniture on the front of the boat), we could not have asked for anything more…except to stay another week! This was definitely a trip of a lifetime, one we will have to do every year!

My husband and I booked our honeymoon with Travis and Tara, and they made it the most unforgettable trip! They did not miss a beat. Travis and Tara are incredibly thoughtful and put so much effort into making our honeymoon unforgettable. They made us the perfect itinerary for the week and even planned a dinner on a private island with a bonfire for the two of us. We are counting down the days until we can come back, and would recommend this trip to anyone. We wanted to try something different and they did not disappoint! Plus, all the food is delicious!!!

Here’s to the best captain and chef any sailing venture could have. Thanks for the awesome accommodations and making sure we were able to do what every our “5” hearts desired - from snorkeling to the best spots we have ever seen in all of our travels to lounging on the water, paddle boarding, hiking, “diving from the upper deck”, dinghy midnight runs, to star gazing, and much more! Thanks to you all for finding the best turtle spots ever. And so much more, big jellies, box jellies, eagle rays, reef squid, sharks, “crunching” parrot fish, trunk fish, and so many more. Tara said their goal was for this to be “the best week of vacation” and she underpromised and RumAway overdelivered. This was a life-changing vacation and one of the best weeks of my life. Tara’s meals were fantastic and accommodating to various dietary desires. Travis’ sailing trips were so fun and they both are a joy to be around. Fast friends. Even though it had been a while since they chartered in St. John they even knew the best mooring balls and were correct. They adapted to the various needs of our party and a “tandem” boat. This was the most magical vacation ever🤩. Travis and Tara are so so knowledgeable about all things Caribbean, making our transits beautiful wonderful experiences, and Tara made such delectable masterpieces, especially the ahi tuna nachos and rum cake! I could have eaten the entire tray myself! We loved having the sails up, their knowledge of where to snorkel, our on island day exploring Virgin Gorda, and all of their input.

Some of our favorite things were all the beautiful snorkel spots and the amazing sea life we saw, walking the sandy beaches of Anegada and lobster dinner on the beach and dancing, Saba Rock, the Baths, Jost Van Dyke, just floating in the beautiful sea, watching the stars at night, and ALL of Tara’s meals. They are master drink mixers as well!

I wish we could have stayed for 2 weeks or forever. I can’t wait to return and do a different area. I can’t recommend them highly enough! If you’re considering a catamaran trip—theirs is the ONLY one to do. Tell them Beth sent you 😜.

Wonderful trip!!! Despite the threat of 2 tropical storms (neither of which touched us) you were very flexible and allowed us to go to all of the amazing spots we wanted to visit. Your suggestions on places to go was spot on. Really liked the land tour of Virgin Gordan (particularly the Copper Mine and Savannah Beach). All the meals were amazing! I think I put on 5 lbs. We loved the foredeck with the dock and the 4 Bote chairs. We hope you have a wonderful and successful charter season. Be safe. Stay in touch.

How do we begin to THANK YOU for such an amazing week? Each island, each bay, each dock was stunning.
Every meal was fabulous and we will miss Tara’s cooking and Travis’ grilling.

Our family vacation to the BVI was exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. While out at sea, the sail, the scenery, and yacht made the trip refreshing and chill. The land tours and snorkeling was amazing. The Baths and Copper mine tour were extremely unique and each snorkel spot held different underwater creatures and colorful coral. Our charter, Rum Away, had the perfect layout to accommodate our family of five. The Crew was amazing! We now count Captain Travis and Tara as part of our family and can not wait to explore with them again. Chef Tara's food was amazing and Captian Travis was super engaged with a family members interest in sailing. The Crew knew exactly the best harbors to stay and places to visit. Though our vacation only lasted a week, the memories made will last a lifetime!

The yacht was extremely roomy for 5 adults. We used three bedrooms each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms had ample storage and wonderful bed linens that were decorated beautifully and extremely maintained. Seating on the front of the yacht was very comfortable for stretching out and relaxing while sailing as well as a great hangout when docked.

I am thankful our days were active as we were fed extremely well. Chef Tara's stuffed French Toast topped with berries was such a treat to start the day. Lunches ranged from salads with homemade dressings to smash burgers, and dinners consisted of Tara's chicken scampi and ribeyes with au gratin potatoes which we continue to talk about. But, to top it all off were DESSERTS! Her Key Lime pie is heavenly, while her rum cake was very moist and dreamy, the rum bread pudding was yummy and we could have licked the dish that held creme brûlée!

Rum Away had individual snorkel gear, individual paddle boards, a multi-person paddle board, a floating dock, and floating FatBoy bean bag chairs/loungers (which were our favorites on and off the boat).

We now count Captain Travis and Chef Tara as family! We were welcomed at the airport by Travis and had a quick walk to the dock and boat where we were greeted by Tara and refreshing scented towels. Our group consisted of two young pilots right out of college and one was extremely drawn to Captain Travis and soaked up as much knowledge as he could.

We will all be dreaming of your ahi nachos! What an amazing week we had! We knew it was going to be a great week when we got the best mooring ball at Kelly’s Cove. We were all blown away by our day adventure on Virgin Gorda. We saw 23 shades of blue water and each beach just kept getting better. No guest should miss a night of sand dancing and lobster dinners at the Wonky Dog.

Wow! You had your hands full with 8 ridiculous adults. The way you navigated rough waters, a cold (Dang, sorry Trav!), and folks up at sunrise past sailors’ midnight. RumAway is a true Beauty. We see your attention to detail in every aspect of things. But what truly mattered to us was how you made us feel. Our stomachs are full, hearts are fuller. WOW, WOW, WOW, DID WE HAVE FUN! Such a stunning boat, even equipped with dancing poles, lucky us! The food was fancier than Applebees on a date night - seriously yummy. The sailing was epic. Thank you for the very special and memorable week in the USVI. We adored St John - all the nature, stars/darkness, hikes, snorkels, and beaches. It was a perfect fit for our family. We (the kids especially!) enjoyed the tubing and fast dinghy rides :)

You accommodated all our interests and food requests which made it fully relaxing, but also lively and fund with good cocktails, Carib beers, dice games, and dock walks. It was the perfect balance.

I think everyone's favorite memory will be feeding and cannonballing the tarpons at night.

Our week aboard the Rumaway far exceeded our expectations, and then some! It was our first time staying on a catamaran and sailing around the USVI, sleeping at sea, visiting hidden away coves and beaches. What a thrill! What a joy! And having the two of you as our hosts, Captain and "Captainess", our guides, and our charming company for the week was magical. You treated us like royalty, and we think you are USVI royalty. Thank you for creating so many unique experiences and showing us the special St John that you know so well. We will be counting the days until we're able to return for another adventure in paradise!!

Thank you so much for the most relaxing week ever! Our family of 5 from NJ who had never done a sailing vacation before had the most amazing time! The boat was amazing, and we loved all the toys! We loved all the snorkeling experiences - turtles, shark(!), fish, the Lime Out Taco Bar was the most unique experience along with pizza on the water and a convert! You made us feel so welcome, accommodated all our needs and took us to the most beautiful places with the most amazingly blue water we have ever seen. We will definitely recommend Rumaway to all our friends! Hopefully the pictures of all the food with help with the media.

We cannot say enough to express what an incredible experience it was to charter with Travis & Tara aboard RumAway. From picking us up at the airport with “Welcome to St. Thomas” refreshments to the send-off breakfast on our last morning, we were blown away by Travis & Tara’s hospitality, warmth, passion, and excitement for life and commitment to providing the ultimate experience for their guests. RumAway is a beautiful vessel and perfectly suited for exactly whatever type of vacation you desire whether that is relaxing in the sun on the deck or on the oversized bean-bag chairs in the ocean, snorkeling with sea turtles, paddle-boarding or hiking to sugar factory ruins. Travis and Tara are very gracious hosts and put forth extreme effort to ensure their guests have a great time. Tara is an excellent chef and presents meals carefully crafted toward the requests of the group. We enjoyed every meal and never went hungry! Travis is an exceptional captain and knew exactly which cove we should go to for the experience we were looking for that day. We enjoyed listening to Travis explain the history of the area and point out various points of interest as we sailed along. Of all of the vacations we have taken, this was certainly at the top of our list. We cannot recommend Travis and Tara enough – we look forward to our next vacation aboard RumAway!

Words cannot describe how much we enjoyed this experience! Our family loves vacations, especially in new places like the Rumaway charter cat! We felt at home from day one and that only grew as the days and sunsets passed! Your hospitality was top notch, the best experiences, including the floating dock, paddle boards, kayak, and especially the tubing led to days of full enjoyment. We loved spending the time chatting over coffee or cocktails, especially the sundowners (kids and adult versions of course) enjoyed while we heard Travis blow the conch - then letting the kids have fun. The food was absolutely amazing, especially thankful for your outstanding gluten free menu - truly appreciated! I spent my whole life visiting the VI and this was my first time spent aboard a catamaran. It exceeded my wildest expectations by far! How did you enjoy your cruising vacation?
We loved our trip with Travis and Tara. It was our first catamaran charter and we had high expectations going into the vacation. It lived up to and even exceed all of them.

How would you describe your Captain and crew? Were they Courteous? Helpful? Friendly? Attentive? Knowledgeable?
We can’t say enough about the crew. That was probably our biggest fear going into the trip. Could we get along with strangers for 6 nights. They quickly put that fear to rest from the first minute we met. They were engaging and excellent at making us feel right at home (on their home). They were great with our kids too. They shared interesting facts about the islands and the boat. And all with a smile on their faces.

Tell me about your meals? Did the menus meet your expectations? Did your Chef and Crew pay close attention to your Preference Sheets?
Tara is a great chef and the food was delicious and varied. She catered to both adults and the kids. The menu was exactly what we discussed and they had provisioned the boat with all our preferences we shared in advance. She made great daily cocktails at sunset which was really cool and fun.

How is the yacht? Is she clean and well-maintained? Were your cabins comfortable? Were the outdoor spaces adequate for lounging? Was there enough shade?
We loved the boat. It was clean and well-maintained. The cabins were comfortable and the air conditioning worked great. We liked the front lounging areas and they had plenty of comfy seating options. The back swim platform was great too. There was plenty of sun and plenty of shade depending on what you wanted.

What did you like most about the yacht? What did you like the least? What would have made you more comfortable or satisfied?
The boat had ample room for all of us both below deck and above. One of the cool things about Rumaway was all the toys they have on board. We used them all. Kayaks, paddleboards (including one stable and big enough for all 5 of us that was the envy of others all stops), a floating dock, water beanbags, cool rocking chairs and hammocks, a tube and sub-wing for the dinghy to pull. There wasn’t much we didn’t like. Perhaps a flybridge would have been nice, but we knew the boat didn’t have this going into the trip so it wasn’t a big deal for us.

How did you find the pace and the itinerary of your vacation?
The pace was great as Travis and Tara gave us plenty of options. They were active when we were active and gave us breaks when we wanted to relax. They never said no to any of our requests. The itinerary was a little of everything which is exactly what we wanted on our first charter experience. A trip to town for shopping, quiet secluded coves, great beaches and snorkeling, hiking, a cool party with live music at Christmas Cove.

Would you charter this yacht again? If not, please explain:
Yes, we can’t think of much that could have been better! We would highly recommend Rumaway and Travis and Tara.

From the moment I stepped onto RumAway, I knew it would be an experience like no other! And it certainly did not disappoint!! We were greeted with smiles and hospitality. My husband, who stays curious, eagerly started exploring the Catamaran with Travis. While, Tara, took right away to making sure she had everything we needed or wanted in our cabin and aboard the boat. I loved sitting at the bow while we sailed from bay to bay! The water is so crystal clear that you could see the bottom of the ocean at a depth of 60+ feet! The views seem to have no end, along with the cool breeze and mists of salt water as the waves crest, make you realize that you are in paradise! It is truly fascinating to watch Travis sail with such ease. You can tell they are both passionate, experienced, and knowledgeable of the area. We started our days with sunshine, fresh coffee and breakfast every morning! We were so impressed with the meals Tara prepared for us! The Ahi Tuna nachos were a favorite that we have tried to mimic since we have been back home! We paddle boarded, which my husband is way better balanced than I am, apparently, and relaxed on the floating dock by the boat for hours. We ended our days with cocktails and the most breathtaking sunsets, that you have to see to believe!! We loved snorkeling at Maho Bay with sea turtles and tropical fish in every color! We even had our first experience scuba diving, since they are both certified and have all the gear! Travis took us for a fun ride in the RumRunner to the beach at St John for us to have lunch and pick up some souvenirs! The sightseeing is unmatched by any other place I have been! If you are considering a vacation to the Virgin Islands, this is the way to go!! I couldn’t imagine being cooped up in a hotel or Airbnb after experiencing the luxury of living on RumAway for a week! The sights, the smells, the salt, the food, the company, the laughs, the rum! Everything was absolutely perfect!! We are so grateful for Travis and Tara for giving us the vacation of a lifetime!!
